1952
What we know today as the Briery Gap Theatre and Cultural Centre was constructed in 1952 and opened its doors on April 25th 1953, showing the film "Scaramouche". The Palace Cinema closed its doors in 1987 with a showing of "Crocodile Dundee".
1977
The building was purchased by Cork County Council and a major refurbishment was undertaken from 1997 to 1998 and provided a Library and a Theatre/Cinema. The Theatre/Cinema was leased out to the Board of Directors of the Briery Gap until 2016, when a fire devastated the building, which has remained closed since.
2021 onwards
Cork County Council embarked on plans for a new, state-of-the-art cultural hub featuring a 217-seat auditorium and cinema, with a bar and library. Construction began in January 2022 and was completed in June 2024. In September 2024, the new Briery Gap reopened its doors and now hosts a wide array of theatre, music, film, and community events.
