Film Synopsis | In 1970, Massachusetts, unemployed carpenter J.B. (Josh O’Connor) lives with his wife Terri (Alana Haim) and their two young sons. In an ill-conceived bid to turn around his ailing fortunes, J.B. plans to rob a local modern art gallery, and while he escapes with a cache of Arthur Dove paintings, events quickly conspire against him, and he is forced to go on the run.
Director Kelly Reichardt’s idiosyncratic approach to storytelling is a surprisingly good fit for this gorgeously autumnal, melancholic heist movie which swiftly dispenses with the crime to focus on its aftermath. A character study of a man whose failure as a thief is matched by poor decision making in his private life.
