Film
Frustrated with his commitment-phobic boyfriend, Chris (Bowen Yang), and facing pressure to marry from his wealthy family (to whom he hasn’t yet come out), Min (Han Gi-chan), a queer Korean man living in the US, proposes a marriage of convenience to his friend Angela (Kelly Marie Tran), offering to fund her partner Lee’s (Lily Gladstone) IVF treatments in exchange for a green card. Their plan becomes even more complicated when Min’s grandmother (Youn Yuh-jung) makes a surprise visit from Seoul and insists on organising an extravagant Korean wedding banquet.
Andrew Ahn’s reimagining of Ang Lee’s 1993 film retains James Schamus, co-writer and co-producer of the original, resulting in a contemporary work that stays true to the earlier film’s vision of compassion and inclusiveness. Notes by David O’Mahony.
