This lively two-hour workshop gives young people, musicians, music educators and curious listeners a chance to get inside a jazz quartet, with live playing, practical demonstrations, conversation and plenty of opportunities to ask questions.

Four accomplished jazz musicians — J.Q. Whitcomb (trumpet, US), Brian Priestley (piano, UK), Jinju Jang (double bass, South Korea) and John Philip Murray (drums, Ireland) — will explore how the quartet works together, while tracing jazz from its roots in blues and swing through bebop and Brazilian jazz, and into its connections with rock, funk, fusion and hip-hop.

The musicians will introduce their instruments before exploring rhythm, melody, form and improvisation through live examples. You’ll hear how a soloist and rhythm section respond to each other, discover the signals musicians use on stage, and see how a group can improvise together without knowing exactly what comes next.

The workshop will finish with a performance by the quartet, followed by a short recap of the ideas explored.

Open to young people, music educators, musicians and anyone interested in jazz. No previous knowledge required — just an interest in hearing how the music works.
